I have noticed a need for a back-to-basics movement in the quality of J2EE and Web-based applications. Poor software development life-cycle processes, combined with the complexity of the J2EE technology stack, are resulting in IT applications that are too slow, fragile, or that are not scalable or maintainable. That's just not going to cut it. Problematic business applications mean loss of revenue for the business in one way or another, which ultimately means bad things for IT organizations (and you), one way or another. Back in the days of monolithic "green screen" applications, there wasn't a lot between the application code and the OS, and those applications were, arguably, less complex.
